{"id":12,"date":"2011-07-30T15:47:11","date_gmt":"2011-07-30T14:47:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/friendsofsaintmichaels.co.uk\/?page_id=12"},"modified":"2014-10-13T18:47:53","modified_gmt":"2014-10-13T17:47:53","slug":"treasures","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/friendsofsaintmichaels.co.uk\/?page_id=12","title":{"rendered":"Treasures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/friendsofsaintmichaels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/candlemass.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-98\" title=\"candlemass\" src=\"http:\/\/friendsofsaintmichaels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/candlemass-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/friendsofsaintmichaels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/candlemass-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/friendsofsaintmichaels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/candlemass.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The interior featured a series of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clerestory\">clerestory<\/a> windows facing south, a stone arch in the chancel and a row of stone columns with foliated decoration (carved with leaf ornamentations).\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pre-Raphaelite_Brotherhood\">Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood<\/a>, a group of people active in various areas of the arts who were influenced by the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quattrocento\">Quattrocento<\/a> period of Italian art, were closely involved with the decoration of the interior.\u00a0 Bodley was informally associated with this recently formed group, in particular with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_Burne-Jones\">Edward Burne-Jones<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Morris\">William Morris<\/a>, a long-term friend.\u00a0 William Morris himself, along with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_Webb\">Philip Webb<\/a> <a title=\"Stained Glass\" href=\"http:\/\/friendsofsaintmichaels.co.uk\/?page_id=155\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-96\" title=\"st raphael\" src=\"http:\/\/friendsofsaintmichaels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/st-raphael.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Charles_Faulkner_%28architect%29&amp;action=edit\">Charles Faulkner<\/a>, was responsible for the painting of the chancel roof.\u00a0 The large windows on the western face of the church were made and installed by Morris, Marshall, Faulkner &amp; Co., the predecessor of Morris&#8217;s firm Morris &amp; Co.\u2028 There are many stained glass windows by Morris and Burne-Jones in the\u00a0old building. \u00a0The east end of Burges&#8217; building features a large trio of stepped lancets with basic two-light tracery.\u2028 Internal fixtures include a grey marble font and a green <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Serpentine#Overview\">serpentine and calcite (verde antique)<\/a> pulpit, both designed and made by Bodley.\u00a0 The noted stained glass designer <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Eamer_Kempe\">Charles Eamer Kempe<\/a> was responsible for the restoration and installation of a 16th century\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reredos\">reredos<\/a> of Flemish origin.\u00a0 This depicts three scenes from Christ&#8217;s life in the form of a triptych\u00a0which sadly has been removed due to awaiting restoration. \u00a0St Raphael by William Morris,1862. \u2028<a title=\"Vestments\" href=\"http:\/\/friendsofsaintmichaels.co.uk\/?page_id=171\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-97 alignleft\" title=\"vest2\" src=\"http:\/\/friendsofsaintmichaels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/vest2-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"157\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"http:\/\/friendsofsaintmichaels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/vest2-199x300.jpg 199w, http:\/\/friendsofsaintmichaels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/vest2.jpg 682w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 157px) 100vw, 157px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a title=\"Misericords\" href=\"http:\/\/friendsofsaintmichaels.co.uk\/?page_id=129\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-102\" title=\"wood 1\" src=\"http:\/\/friendsofsaintmichaels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/wood-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"281\" height=\"211\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/friendsofsaintmichaels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Beanlands-Chalice.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-678\" src=\"http:\/\/friendsofsaintmichaels.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Beanlands-Chalice.jpg\" alt=\"Beanland's Chalice\" width=\"124\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The church also boasts a collection of antique ecclesiastical vestments,\u00a0some remarkable wood carvings and William Burges\u00a0remarkable Beanlands Chalice described by David Beevers in the <a title=\"The Flyer\" href=\"http:\/\/friendsofsaintmichaels.co.uk\/?page_id=625\" target=\"_blank\">August 2014 edition of the Flyer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Links to Photo Albums\u00a0<\/strong><strong>and collections<br \/>\n<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mikelaslett\/favorites\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Laslett&#8217;s Gallery<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.saintmichaelsbrighton.org\/gallery.htm\" target=\"_blank\">St Michael&#8217;s Gallery<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The interior featured a series of clerestory windows facing south, a stone arch in the chancel and a row of stone columns with foliated decoration (carved with leaf ornamentations).\u00a0 The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of people active in various areas &hellip;
